On February 24th, we took 10 of our young people and their volunteers for an overnight trip to PGL in Liddington. This was the largest group we have ever taken for a ‘Weekend Away’ but we all had a fantastic time and the children and young people achieved so much during the trip. When we arrived, we unpacked our things and settled into our rooms before going to get our lunch. After lunch we played ball games as our first activities, our young people and their volunteers played in teams and got to know each other a little better over the course of the games. After this, we followed the leaders over to the obstacle course and all of our young people had a go at the course and with their volunteers, lots of them completed the whole thing! In the evening, we went for dinner and had a campfire afterwards. We sang songs and roasted marshmallows before going back to the accommodation to watch a DVD before bed.
After a good night’s sleep, everyone was up and ready early for a very busy day of activities. We started off at Aeroball, where lots of the young people played against each other and their volunteers on the trampolines. Afterwards, we all headed over to the Crate challenge where the young people climbed towers of crates before they were knocked down to leave them swinging on their harnesses. After some lunch, we went for the last activity of the weekend, the giant swing. Each of the Me2 Club young people got the chance to go up as high as they wanted, each young person went on with their volunteer and everyone had lots of fun, even if it was very cold! After the giant swing everyone piled onto the coach to come home and everyone reported that they would like to come away again with Me2 Club and that they had made new friends during the trip. For each of our young people the ‘Weekend Away’ means facing a variety of personal and physical challenges but every one of them met these challenges and conquered their fears. We are immensely proud of each of them and would like to thank the volunteers who helped them every step of the way. Without our volunteers we would not be able to run these trips and give our young people such an amazing experience.
This ‘Weekend Away’ was kindly funded by the NHS Berkshire West Fund for respite breaks awarded through Berkshire Community Foundation.
