Terrific Teenagers enjoy independence on our latest ‘Weekend Away’
On 11th & 12th of May we took 7 of our teenagers and 4 volunteers away to Green Park Activity Centre. We started the weekend off with a shopping trip to buy the ingredients for our BBQ in the evening. The teenagers chose meat, rolls, fruit and condiments, helped to unpack the shopping onto the conveyor belt and packed it all into the bags. After the shopping trip we got on the coach and travelled to Green Park where we unpacked and had some lunch before our first activity Trebuchet Building.
The teenagers worked in teams to build the catapults and had fun seeing who could fire tennis balls the furthest. Next we moved onto Climbing where the teenagers and volunteers helped support each other up the climbing wall. Lots of the teenagers had more than one go and gained confidence with each try to get higher than before. After climbing we started preparing the salads and vegetables for the BBQ, the teens helped cook the burgers, sausages and veggie kebabs on the BBQ and everyone enjoyed the rewards of their hard work. We also prepared fruit kebabs with each teen cutting a different fruit and sharing with others to create a mix which we enjoyed covered in chocolate from the chocolate fountain. We wound down the evening with a showing of a musical film with popcorn whilst some of the girls enjoyed painting the volunteer’s nails! After the film ended we settled into our beds ready for another fun filled day on Sunday.
After a spot of breakfast, we headed over to archery in the sunshine where the teenagers all said they were proud of how they had improved their skills over the session with everyone having more than one go at hitting the targets. After Archery we moved on to the zip wire, which was a big challenge for our young people as it was a very tall tower. By encouraging each other and cheering everyone on most of the teenagers went down the wire and faced their fears which was fabulous to watch. We all enjoyed a relaxed lunch after the excitement of the morning and finished up the weekend with some mountain biking around the fields. Everyone enjoyed getting to grips with the KMX trikes and racing each other around. Finally, it was time to pack up and catch the coach back to the Me2 Club office and go home.
We would like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers who helped us on this trip as we would not have been able to go without their support. The teenagers also deserve a big congratulations for all their successes during the weekend including the shopping, BBQ and team work.
This weekend was supported by Berkshire Community Foundation, the funding was kindly received from the NHS Berkshire West Fund for Carers Respite Breaks. One parent said “We went for a coffee with the mums and dads of 3 other young people on the trip! Really great to have a chat and share ideas for meeting up. In the evening we took our other son out for a meal and he got all the attention, which is very unusual!”. Thanks BCF & NHS Berkshire West Fund for making the weekend possible!
