‘Day Away’ to Cotswold Wildlife Park is a roaring success

Thanks to funding from Berkshire Community Foundation on Wednesday 30th August we had our 2nd ‘Day Away’ and this time it was to the Cotswold Wildlife Park.

The trip was oversubscribed but we were able to take 10 lucky Me2 Club children, plus 3 volunteers and 4 members of staff, for a fun-filled day out. The aim of the trip was to increase the children’s confidence and independence skills. On arrival at the park there was a group discussion about what animals they wanted to see and a plan was made so that everyone’s ‘voice’ was heard. During the day, they were encouraged to: spend their pocket money in the gift shop; choose their own ice creams and look after their own belongings.

Feedback from the children and their families was overwhelmingly positive and our aim is now to secure further funding so that all our children get their wish to come away with us on future ‘Days Away’ and ‘Weekends Away’.

From the children (who could give this information): 8 said they would like to come on another Me2 Club trip. Examples they gave of future trips included Marwell Zoo, Paulton’s Park and Thorpe Park.

From a volunteer: “I was able to spend more time with T. before starting scouts, he is more comfortable around me now.”

From a parent: “It was a treat to do what I wanted for once, and it’s amazing how much can get done without having to deal with behaviour difficulties!”

Thank you once again to the Trustees of Berkshire Community Foundation who made this trip possible.
