A Fantastic Weekend Away!

On the 10th and 11th November, we took 8 Me2 Club young people and their volunteers on a Weekend Away to PGL Liddington. We arrived and settled into our bedrooms before going to lunch. Our first activity was Aeroball, where the young people played against each other and their volunteers on the trampolines. Due to the poor weather, there was a change of plan for our afternoon activities resulting in us playing indoor games such as dodgeball, Frisbee, wink murder and several others. In the evening we had dinner before having a disco with everyone enjoying lots of great music and dancing! Next was an indoor ‘campfire’ with marshmallows, campfire songs and stories. We then went back to our accommodation for a DVD and games before bed.

The next morning we were up early and ready for another day of activities with our first activity of the day being archery. Everyone got the chance to have a go with the instructor before a competition between some of the young people and their volunteers to see who could get the most bullseyes! The next activity was the vertical challenge where the young people climbed up a series of different surfaces including ladders, tires and a rock climbing wall to reach the top. One of our young people was determined to get to the top, after 25 minutes of trying and with a lot of encouragement from the staff, volunteers and other Me2 Club young people, he made it to the top, what a fantastic achievement which really boosted his confidence! We then had a quick break for lunch and had a chance to pack up all our things. Our final activity was the giant swing, each of the Me2 Club young people got the chance to go up as high as they wanted and everyone had lots of fun! After the giant swing everyone piled onto the coach to come home. All our young people reported that they would like to come away again with Me2 Club and that they had made new friends during the trip. For each of our young people the ‘Weekend Away’ means facing a variety of personal and physical challenges but every one of them met these challenges and conquered their fears. We are immensely proud of each of them and would like to thank the volunteers who helped them every step of the way. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to run these trips and give our young people such an amazing experience.

The ‘Weekend Away’ was funded by NHS Fund for Carers awarded through Berkshire Community Foundation. Thank you for making it possible for us to take part in so many fun activities!

“S enjoys taking part in activities that they did not like to do before, like cooking and taking part in big group games. Instead of always sitting in the corner they are now able to join the group without me even encouraging them to do so.”
